2012 St Louis

The 2012 Reunion at St Louis, MO

A reunion message from the President.

The reunion in St. Louis was another great success for the USS Toledo members. A great time was had by all who attended. I would personally like to thank committee members Linda Starrett for the wonderful selection of the Sheraton Hotel. Our rooms were beautiful and the staff very cooperative. Also, Paul and Carolyn who worked with The Military Reunion Planners to set up our trips. The day we spent at the Arch was memorable, some of us ventured up into the arch via tram car, others watched an IMAX movie on Louis and Clark. The next day we took a cruise on the Mississippi River. All in all we fell in love with St. Louis.

The days we spent in the hospitality room viewing old memorabilia from the ship and some of the ports we were in proved to bring back many old memories. The hours renewing old friendships and catching up on shipmates current situations remains the reason we stay together and converge on yet another city to celebrate the USS Toledo and what it means to each of us who served our time on her.

During the memorial service we recognized three plank owners who were able to come to the reunion this year. Don Conrad, John Conn and Don Mickelson placed the wreath beneath the flag pole at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. We also memorialized those shipmates who passed on to glory since the last reunion by reading their names and ringing the bell after each name.

I would like to thank Ray Puhl for serving as secretary/treasurer for the past two years. Ray has decided to pass the job onto someone else. We will miss you Ray, I felt like we were just getting to know you. Warren Robinson has volunteered for the position and was elected at the meeting. William Sol has volunteered to take Warren's place as area 4 director. Thanks to all of our volunteers who help keep this organization afloat and step up to the plate when needed.

It was voted to hold the next reunion in San Diego CA. Those of you who were not able to make this reunion can perhaps meet up with us in 2014. Our numbers are dwindling. It is important to keep this organization together as long as possible so if you are able to come we look forward to seeing you at another great reunion.

We missed those of you who were too ill to travel. We want you to know that we were thinking of you and wish you all well.

One last note, Judy and I took an extra day and went up to Hannibal to see the Mark Twain Museum and the birthplace of Samuel Clemens. Most of his famous books were written there and the town is the same as it was then. We loved it and had a great day.

Have a blessed holiday season.

Peace, Don Wood- President
